Happy Friday everyone! I wanted to share with you some math we have been working on. We started our measurement unit this week. Students are working with meter sticks to measuring objects in our classroom and around the school. The first grade students are determining which object is longer or shorter, and providing evidence of their choice with a picture or numbers. Second grade students are also determining which object is longer or shorter, but they take it a step further. They are learning how to figure out how much longer or shorter an object is. I wanted to share with you how they are solving these problems. Some students use linking cubes to find out the difference, and then draw a picture of what they did. Other students use what we call a bar model. A bar model is a pictorial representation of what they are seeing in their heads. In the pictures you will see examples of both. Make sure to ask your child about how they solved this problem in class.

Daniel enjoyed measuring last night for homework. I wrote a list of some things around the house to measure, some of them quite silly, and he was having a fun time with it.
One question, why is the class measuring in meters? Is the US finally moving towards using the metric system with the rest of the world? :0)

What a great question Lauren! We start with the metric system for a few reasons. One reason is that is easier to learn as it is in base ten. The other reason is that they need to know the metric system because so many other countries use it. We will be learning the U.S. customary system in the next unit. Keep the questions coming!
